A Surprise Proposal in Paris: How We Planned the Moment Together
A surprise proposal can last only a few seconds. The planning behind it takes a little longer — especially when you’re visiting Paris and trying to keep the whole thing a secret from the person beside you.
For this proposal, my client and I prepared the moment together before the trip. We agreed on the exact place, chose a time that would give them room to enjoy it, and worked out how I could be nearby without giving anything away. My job was to photograph the question as it happened, then give them space to take it all in.
First, we found a plan that felt like them
There is no single “best place” to propose in Paris. A famous view might be exactly what you’ve imagined, or you might feel more at home somewhere quieter. What matters is choosing a setting where you can focus on each other, rather than on the people passing behind you.
Before the session, we talked through the location and the way my client wanted the proposal to unfold. We chose a precise meeting point and agreed on the timing in advance. That preparation meant there was no need for last-minute directions or a conspicuous conversation with a photographer on the day.

Photographing the proposal without interrupting it
On the day, I was hidden close to the spot we had chosen together. I knew where the couple would be and when to expect them, so I could be ready without stepping into their moment.
That is the part of proposal photography I care about most. The photograph of the question matters, of course. So do the expressions just before it, the realization, the answer and the first few moments afterwards. I’m there to notice them, not to ask you to repeat them for the camera.
We had also chosen the time with the surroundings in mind, to give the couple the best chance of having that moment without being disturbed. Paris is a living city, so no photographer can promise an empty public space. A thoughtful plan — and a little flexibility — makes a real difference.
What happens after the question?
Once the surprise is over, there is no need to switch immediately into a formal photoshoot. You can take a breath, talk, laugh, look at the ring or simply stay close for a minute.
We then continued with photographs of the couple together. I offered guidance when it helped and let them move naturally when they were comfortable. The result is more than a picture of the proposal itself: it is a record of what those first moments of being engaged felt like.

Will my partner notice the photographer?
We agree on the place, timing and how I will position myself beforehand. I can photograph the proposal discreetly, but I won’t promise to be invisible in every public setting. We’ll choose a plan that suits the location and feels natural for both of you.
What if the place is crowded?
Crowds are part of Paris, and conditions can change. We can plan for a suitable time and discuss an alternative nearby if the original spot is too busy. The aim is to protect the experience, not to force a photograph at any cost.
Can we have couple photographs afterwards?
Yes. Once you’ve had a moment to yourselves, we can continue with a relaxed couple session. That gives you photographs of the proposal and of the two of you enjoying what has just happened.
